• The 2020 Vinha dos Utras is technically a field blend from old vines (60 to 80 years), but it is heavily dominated by Arinto dos Açores. According to the back label, that variety accounts for more than 95% of the field blend, although winemaker António Moita Maçanita says while that is 'possibly' true—who can tell in field blends?—he prefers to say more simply that the vineyard is a 60- to 80-year-old field blend 'dominated by Arinto dos Açores, with some plants of Verdelho, Terrantez, Alicante Branco and Boal.' It was aged on the lees and partly (30% of the juice) in second-use French oak for 14 months. It is near bone dry and comes in at 12.1% alcohol.After some confessed bottle variations in the 2019, the winery has moved to Diam cork for this. This is completely different from the 2019, which seemed to me to be almost all muscle. This is the richest wine I've seen from the Azores, even with that 12.1%. It's almost unctuous in texture. It's beautifully wrought, with the only remaining question being how it will develop. It should hold some 15 years, maybe more. It will be fascinating to see what happens to this multifaceted and surprisingly lush Arinto dos Açores. The price point, to be sure, is another matter. 96/100
